In the project, A digital system for increased source sorting and involvement in the public environment (so-called "On-the-go deposite!"), we will carry out a study in a real urban environment during the summer of 2021 in Örnsköldsvik to see how the deposit on disposable mugs is experienced by the population. The impact of the deposit system on collection levels will be evaluated, as will the quality of the material collected. Consumer and point of sale acceptance is also an important variable to follow.
The goal of the project "Pawn in town" is to create citizen involvement to increase source sorting and minimize littering in public environments by using and developing a digital service for pledges, have clear information on how packaging should be source sorted and to offer a reasonable distance to the source sorting bins. The digital service will also provide consumers with incentives and help to do the right thing, as well as facilitate dialogue between the municipality and residents. The goals are based on a previous study conducted in 2019 in the same city, Circular on-the-go packaging.
Bower (formerly Pantapå), which has an app for pledges, will in the project develop it so that it will work to also pledge in the city. A deposit is placed on mugs for take-away drinks in Örnsköldsvik's city center. To be able to use the deposit, the consumer must download an app, scan the code on the mug, and then put it in the right container at a recycling station or in the special source sorting stations that we place in the project. The deposit must then be able to be taken out in the form of money, points or donation.
At the exhibited source sorting stations, there will be containers for sorting paper, glass and plastic packaging, a container for the rest and pipes for aluminum cans and PET bottles. In the study, picking analyzes will be performed to see to what extent consumers have sorted and ordered at source. It will also be possible for the consumer to provide feedback via the app as the evaluation of the experience and behavior is an important part of the study.
The project is funded by Vinnova.
