Examensarbete: Foam Handling and Measurement for continuous forming processes

2022-12-19

Are you interested in material science and innovative value-added forest-based products? Would you like to work in an innovative-driven environment with experts in fiber and cellulose material and process development? We are looking for a dedicated master student to join us at MoRe Research Örnsköldsvik AB, a part of RISE. We conduct projects together with academic partners and industry from Sweden and abroad.

Background
Previous and ongoing research projects within our department have established concepts for the production of fiber-based low-density materials, "foams", which can replace plastics in packaging and insulation applications. With the Bioeconomy Arena initiative, a hub that brings together RISE infrastructure for the development, upscaling and commercialization of new bio-based products and solutions are becoming a reality. One pilot is being constructed for the continuous production of such materials. However, knowledge of continuous handling and measurement of wet foam materials is needed. This thesis work will evaluate possible technical solutions for continuous pumping and measurement of wet, fiber-based foams.

Thesis description
The master student will continue and deepen the ongoing work related to our research within the low-density materials area. This study will focus on utilizing existing knowledge and experience around pumping, inlet box design and measurements. Several candidate pump types available at our site will be tested with fiber-based foams and the effect on foam properties will be evaluated. The development of proposals for, and evaluation of, measurement techniques for continuous monitoring of the foaming process and drying is included.

Profile of applicant
We are looking for a student with surface chemistry or materials engineering background with experience from laboratory work.

Terms
Project period: Spring term 2023, 30 hp. Start upon agreement.

Placement: MoRe Research, Örnsköldsvik.
