Optical properties

Fluorescence: Whiteness is measured on paper and board with and without fluorescence with a light source for daylight D65/10. Not suitable for materials with fluorescent colors.

Preparation: ISO 186 conditioning and calibration according to ISO 4094 and 2469.

Color for paper and board is measured according to ISO 5631-1, -2, 3 with diffuse reflectance. Indoor light C/2, outdoor light D65/10 and D50/2 indoor light without mirror gloss.

Opacity according to ISO 2471 on paper and board, but not suitable for colored material containing fluorescence.

Light scattering and absorption coefficient are measured according to ISO 9416 on paper and board (also pulp sheets). The method leans towards the Kubelka Munk theory and is not a strict measurement by definition. The method is suitable for white and near-white products with an opacity lower than 95%.

Preparation: Before testing, sample handling takes place according to ISO 186 and conditioning according to ISO 187 and ISO 536 surface weight. ISO 2469 measurement of diffuse reflectance factor is also followed.

ISO brightness is measured on paper, board and pulp according to ISO 2471-1, -2 for indoor light and outdoor light. It measures in the blue region of the visible range (VIS).

Preparation: Before testing, sample handling takes place according to ISO 186, ISO 3688 sample preparation and conditioning according to ISO 187. ISO 7213 pulp testing and ISO 2469 measurement of diffuse reflectance factor are also included.
